Fizzy Fish @ Peter Gladwin

Extended Day Play Group

Our environment

Fizzy Fish Pre-School has a self-contained room and playground at Peter Gladwin and by being on a school site it really helps the children to get ready for their transition to school.

The inside area at Fizzy Fish @ Peter Gladwin is just like a  school classroom and has 4 child sized toilet cubicles. We have organised activities for the children such as finding their picture to display on the Who's Here Today board and gathering before meals to share stories from home or discuss how the children are feeling. The rest of the time the children are free to select the activities they wish to participate in. All our toy boxes are labelled with pictures for ease of identification and are stored units at the children's height. During this time adult led activities are also available. The children are invited to participate in the adult led activities, this then allows the adults to give each child the amount of individual attention they need.

Children have access to our lovely outside playground area and we have a dedicated Outside/Forest School practitioner who shares his time between our two pre schools. With a well set out outdoor space we really can encompass our vision of exploration and development by bringing indoor play outside no matter what the weather. We organise outings in our Fizzy Fish bus to the Devils Dyke, the beach and we take the children out of the setting to Lindridge Care Home as we believe that intergenerational sessions are an invaluable experience.

At Fizzy Fish @ Peter Gladwin, we mainly care for 3 & 4 year olds but also accept 2 year olds. A number of our children will have come from Fizzy Fish Nursery so we spend the last term before they move bringing them to our Pre-School setting on a regular basis to spend time with our Pre-School staff and to ensure that their transition is as smooth and stress free as possible for both the children and their parents

 Our staff

We operate at a 6:1 child:adult ratio and follow a Key Person approach. A Key Person has special responsibility for a particular child and their aim is to observe, encourage and extend the child’s learning experiences. They will work with the child and their parents/carers to ensure the child’s care and educational needs are fully met, while ensuring the child is happy and feels secure in the setting.

We work in partnership with parents/guardians to provide high quality childcare, specific to the developmental needs to each child, by actively asking for feedback and comments about our weekly menu, our outings, the activities and the care we provide. We aim to incorporate this feedback into the day to day running of Fizzy Fish. As childcare professionals working together we are constantly talking about and acting upon ways in which we can improve Fizzy Fish.

All our staff attend a number of training courses to ensure that we are up to date with childcare requirements that our practice is guided, both locally and nationally. We also ensure that all staff are up to date with our policies and procedures which cover key welfare issues such as Special Educational Needs, Equalities and Safeguarding of Children.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Each setting has a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) who monitors the needs and progress of children with SEN. We are committed to making our setting inclusive and accessible to all children and making sure that children are able to reach their full potential. To do this staff ensure that the curriculum offered is inclusive of children with special educational needs and children with disabilities.

We treat all children in our care with equal concern so they have the same opportunities to develop their own potential and to grow as individuals with different needs. Sometimes this may mean taking the relevant steps to adapt our facilities or an activity to suit the child’s ability and stage of development, providing additional resources or more attention and support to meet the needs of everyone.

Inclusion

All staff contribute to, and ensure that the setting takes into account each child’s race, culture, religion, language and family values.

We are committed to providing equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice in everything we do. We help children to develop positive attitudes towards people who are different from themselves and help them avoid prejudice. We also help children to develop a sense of their own identity within their racial, cultural and social groups, as well as having the opportunity to learn about cultures that are different from their own. We will encourage parents to share with us details of any festivals, special occasions or artefacts, which may enhance the children’s learning and understanding.

For families who speak languages in addition to English, we develop a means to ensure their full inclusion. We encourage language development and communication by reading stories, singing, signing or Makaton and providing an extensive library of books that are always accessible to the children and exploring language through group discussion.

Food

Snacks and meals are provided by Fizzy Fish and are included in the price. At mealtimes picture placemats are put on tables so the children can see where they are sitting. A helper of the session will help to lay tables and enjoy matching the cups to the placemats. All lunches are prepared by our resident chef based at Fizzy Fish Nursery and are transported to our Pre-School. We are committed to serving the children with healthy and nutritious food and we only use good quality products and ingredients. We are able to cater for allergies or prohibited foods.

Flexible, emergency and occasional childcare

We want to make childcare accessible to all so offer a range of sessions to suit your childcare needs including early drop offs and late pick-ups. Our day starts at 7.30 am and finishes at 6pm. Parents are able to book in extra sessions and swap sessions during the week if needed. We also offer flexibility with our 15 and 30 hours funded places.

Transport Options

Bus routes 1, 1A and 6 are a short walk from the setting. There is on street parking available near the setting.
