Bright Start Nursery

Day nursery

Bright Start is close to the Central Family Hub

Family Hub nurseries provide high quality care and learning for children. Well qualified and experienced staff are skilled in meeting children's individual needs in secure and stimulating environments designed to be bright, warm and nurturing.

Bright Start is based in the city centre to the rear of the Prince Regent swimming pool. The nursery offers families easy access to all major bus routes and Brighton station; a great choice for anyone looking to balance childcare with a commute. The nursery is based in the historic old slipper baths and has an intimate and homely feel.

Bright Start is a full day care nursery for children from 3mths to 5years. Our aim is to provide a high quality, inclusive, and safe learning environment.  We believe that children learn best through playing and doing. The wellbeing and happiness of each child is of utmost importance to us.  We work in partnership with parents to ensure there is a holistic approach to their children’s learning.

Bright Start Nursery is open 51 weeks of the year.

Our environment

The nursery is separated into two environments; the Explorers and Adventurers. Our learning environments are designed to help children feel secure and stimulated. We aim to encouraging children to make choices independently and initiate their own learning with the support and guidance of our staff.

Explorers – 3 months to 2.5 year olds

Children of this age share a room, with an adult child ratio of 1:3 for under 2s and 1:4 for over 2’s. Children are encouraged to access all areas of the room, including messy and creative play, physical activities, story areas, and a safe cosy space for younger babies play. The room benefits from a separate sleep space.

Adventurers – 2.5 years to 5 years old

This environment consists of 4 separate rooms. The main play space gives children opportunities for table-top play, access to a role play area and a cosy book corner. We have a dedicated art room in which children enjoy sand and water play, as well as letting their imaginations run wild. Then there is our Tigers room, with loose parts and construction play, designed to appeal to our two year olds. Our final room is called the Elephants room, it is our sleeping space and we also use it for small group work.

Outside Area

Our outside area was extensively remodeled in 2015 and is surprisingly spacious for a city centre location. Children from both the Explorers and Adventurers have time each day to go outside and be active, come rain or shine. The space includes a bike track, sandpit, mud kitchen and a tunnel. Trees and abundantly planted borders mean that the space has a lush and natural feel. We take our duties around sun safety seriously and have an awning that comes out during hotter weather.

Further along from our outside area we have a buggy park for families to use.

Our Staff

Children enjoy free flow activities, with the support of sensitive and caring key persons. All staff are either qualified or are working toward their level 3 qualification via the council’s apprenticeship scheme. We operate a ‘key-person’ approach where each child and family has a dedicated worker supporting them with all aspects of their settling, their development and their transitions. All children also have a 2nd key person, who can support them if their key person is absent. We have an Early Years teacher who supports all of the learning across the whole setting.

Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

We cater for children with a wide variety of additional needs and differing abilities. We are inclusive and passionate about all children that we care for. Our Deputy Nursery Manager is our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator and many staff are experienced in caring for children with additional needs.

Inclusion

We know that families come in all shapes and sizes. We aim to include everyone in the life of the nursery and we are particularly mindful of less represented groups such as single parents, same sex families and Grandparents.

Around half the children at Bright Start speak more than one language. We celebrate all of the languages spoken at nursery by the children, staff and parents. We access services such as EMAS (ethnic minority achievement service) to support us with some children if needed. We also welcome families in to share stories and songs in their home languages.

Food

Bright Start nursery provides healthy snacks and a breakfast that consists of healthy cereal and toast. Cow’s milk and water are provided at snack and breakfast times. Fresh drinking water is available at all times. Parents are asked to supply either a pack lunch, or a meal to be reheated at midday. At 4pm children have the option of bringing in a cold packed meal, or paying for a nursery tea, which is cooked from scratch on site.

Flexible, emergency and occasional childcare

Ad-hoc sessions may be booked subject to availability for children already attending the nursery. We will consider each request for occasional or emergency childcare on an individual basis, subject to availability.

Transport Options

The Nursery can be accessed on all major bus routes, with the closest stops being the Old Steine, North Street and Gloucester Place. Parking is limited, but families can use the car park of the Prince Regent Swimming Pool to pick-up and drop-off. Brighton Train station is a 5-10 minute walk away.
